Background

For the Housing Inventory Count (HIC), HMIS participating agencies must report the number of beds and units that are available for clients in households with children. In some cases, the agency doesn't have a set number of beds that are available in each unit because the unit can be configured to accommodate different family sizes. In these cases, agencies can use the average size of the families in their project to determine the number of beds for households with children that should be reported on the HIC Form.

Determining Average Family Size

Step 1: The HIC: Average Family Size Data report is available on the Data Analysis tab under the HIC/PIT section of OC Clarity System Reports. Please review the Running a Saved Look knowledge base article for instructions on how to run the report. None of the filters on the report need to be adjusted prior to running.

Step 2: Once the report runs, it will look similar to the image below. A description of each column is below.

• Programs Full Name: Name of the project in HMIS and on the HIC Form
• Number of Clients: Number of clients in households with children active in the project in the previous year.
• Count Households: Number of households with children active in the project in the previous year.
• Average Family Size: The number of clients divided by the number of households active in the previous year.

Step 3: For each project that does not have a set bed count for households with children, multiply the average family size by the number of units in the project. This number becomes the beds for households with children, and should be reported on the HIC Form.

For example, if the project's Average Family Size is 5 and the project has 2 units, there will be 10 beds and 2 units for households with children.
